On Tuesday afternoon, Gruntly girls rugby team [U’15 side, combining 8 pupils from GGS and 8 from the Gordon Schools , Huntly] took on the mighty Shawlands Academy in the Scottish Schools Semi final Cup game at Grantown. Clad in their traditional bright pink tops, the girls were keen for a semi final – having knocked out Auchterarder girls in the Quarter final.
However, after a few minutes on pitch, the powerful rucking of the Shawlands girls and a fast defensive line speed, was soon punching holes in the GGS line and it wasn’t long before a few tries had been scored. Tackling furiously the girls did all they could to hold back the Shawlands attack, April [Huntly] Rosie [GGS], Danielle [GGS] and Cailtlin [ Captain – GGS] showing a lot of grit and determination. Finally after about 15 minutes they got a break and scored their first try,; a real team effort with great support running. By the end of the first half the girls were about 5 tries down, but were still keen to pull more points back.
The second half was equally tenacious- in terms of tackling and rucking. GGS improved their defence- even managing to hold up 2 tries – in part due to the commitment of GGS Full back Susanna and Aicha her Huntly counterpart. They also managed to score 2 tries too – Molly rolling over the line “James “Bond Style” to secure the 2nd try. However, while parts of the Gruntly game improved in the second half, the Shawlands girls were more coordinated and squeezed in another 5 tries before the final whistle. A fine display of girls’ rugby by all involved and a huge pat on the back to the Gruntly girls for getting so far in the competition and aquitting themselves so well … the T in TEAM was there for all to see!
Final score: 17-74
